In perhaps every language on earth, there are phrases and sayings that are difficult for non-native speakers to understand at first.
For instance, what does "the big cheese" mean in English? "Mr. Jones is the big cheese around here." This sentence means that Mr. Jones is a person of importance, power, etc. But if you were to just hear the phrase "big cheese" in a sentence, you most likely would not understand what was being said - unless someone filled you in on the meaning.
In English, there are numerous phrases to describe sleeping. Here are some examples for you!
"It's time to hit the hay!" = It's time to sleep.
"I need to grab some shuteye." = I need to sleep.
"I need to catch some z's." = I need some sleep.
"I'm gonna' head to bed in a few minutes." = I'm going to bed soon.
"I'm gonna' hit the sack." = I'm going to bed.
"I'm gonna' take a snooze."= I'm going to sleep some.
And there you have it, friends. Those are a few phrases you can use when talking about sleep if you want to sound more like a native speaker.
Enjoy!
